Media arrangement
Introduction line
The University Library’s materials are listed in the catalogue (OPAC). The exact location is indicated by the shelfmark, which is shown in the catalogue entry. The shelfmark consists of several components and is usually found on the spine of the book.
Guide to locations
Codes starting with 0 (e.g. 01) refer to items held in the closed stacks. These can be requested for borrowing or for use in the reading room via the catalogue (OPAC).
These items are freely accessible in the library. The exact location can be found on the overview boards in the reading room.
Example: 18 = Textbook collection, basement level of the reading room.
These indicate media assigned to academic chairs or administrative units as part of reference collections. The respective locations are shown in the catalogue.
These shelfmarks consist of two lowercase letters and a four-digit number (e.g. ac1234). These items are held in closed stacks and must always be ordered via the catalogue (OPAC). An exception is shelfmarks beginning with 'ua', which can be obtained from the information desk.
The local indicator SLZ stands for Selbstlernzentrum. (Self-Study Centre). These items can be found in the catalogue (OPAC), but are located at the Viadrina Language Centre in August-Bebel-Straße.
consists of two capital letters + a space + a sequence of digits. This second part of the shelfmark records the media systematically, i.e. they are assigned to a subject. The system used is the Regensburg Union Classification (RVK).
Example: QP 834 = Q - Economics, P - General Business Administration, 834 = Accounting (800), Cost Accounting (830), Cost Accounting Systems (834)
This third part of the signature defines the specific location within a notation.
Example: H114 = Haberstock
These elements of the signature are mapped as follows:
- with a "-" the volume designation, e.g. "-1" for the 1st volume of a multi-volume work
- with round brackets the edition number, e.g. (13) for the 13th edition
- with a "+" the copy, e.g. "+16" for the 16th copy
Literature from all locations is compiled here at the start of each semester in line with lectures and seminars. In addition, folders containing photocopies, essay collections, assignments, and similar materials may also be placed here. The semester course reserves are located in the reading room on the 3rd floor and are arranged alphabetically on the shelves by the name of the respective lecturer.
The libraries listed here, located in various areas of the University Library, are collections from individual scholars:
- Chiellino, housed at the Chair of Prof. Schoor (location code: 636c)
- Kewenig, distributed across various locations in the University Library (various local indicators)
- Kittsteiner, located in the library's stacks (local indicators beginning with ‘ki...’)
- Michler, located in the library's stacks (local indicators beginning with ‘zm...’)
The holdings of these collections are catalogued in the OPAC and can be searched there. You can specifically access these collections by using the filter ‘Publications (at) the EUV / Special Collection’ under ‘Narrow down search’ — for example, ‘Chiellino Library’. This filter can be combined with other search criteria such as author or title.
