Weekend loans can be borrowed from Friday at 12:00 until Saturday at 12:45. The loan period runs from Friday at 12:00 until Monday at 11:00.

Renewals are possible no earlier than five days before the due date, provided the item has not been reserved by another user.

Please note: late returns, including weekend loans, will incur overdue fees.

User account

You can access your user account in the OPAC from outside the university via the “Account” or “Log on” menu items.
After entering your user number and password, you will see a detailed overview of your current loans, requests, reservations, and any outstanding fees.
You can also renew loan periods and cancel reservations directly from your account.

Renewal

You may extend the loan period for your borrowed items starting five days before the due date, provided the items have not been reserved by another user.

How to renew:

  • Via OPAC: Go to the “Account” or “Log in” menu and enter your user number and password. Under the sub-account “Loans”, you can select “Account renewal” to renew all eligible items. Any items that cannot be renewed will be listed with the reason for rejection.
  • By telephone at 0335 / 5534-3366, or
  • In person at the circulation desk on the ground floor of the library

Students and external users may renew items up to six times, provided they have not been reserved.
Weekend loans are not renevable.

Reservation

You can usually reserve books that are currently on loan.

If the title you want is already borrowed, click on the “Get document” button.
In the table that appears, select “reservation” in the first row labelled “Local Holdings”, then enter your user number and password.
To complete the reservation, click on “Send”.

You will immediately see whether your reservation was successful.
We will notify you as soon as the book is available for collection.

Cancelling a Reservation
To cancel a reservation, go to the “Reservations” section of your account, select the title you no longer need, and click on “Cancel reservation”.

You will receive a confirmation message, and the title will be removed from your reservation list.

Order from the magazine

Books labelled as “available to request” in the OPAC — typically with shelfmarks starting with “01/…” or two lowercase letters followed by four digits (e.g. ab5301/...) — are kept in closed stacks outside the library and must be ordered in advance.

To place an order:

  1. Click on “Get document” next to the desired title.
  2. In the table that appears, select “Order” in the first line labelled “Local Holdings”.
  3. Enter your user number and password, click “Send”, then confirm your order by clicking “OK”.

If you order by 13:00 (Monday to Friday), the book will be available for collection at the lending desk from 14:00 the same day.

Orders placed after 13:00 will be ready from 14:00 on the next working day.

Books will be held for you at the lending desk for seven opening days.

Please note: You will not receive an email notification when the book is ready.

Fees

Use of the University Library and its collections is free of charge.

However, certain special services incur fees, including:

  • interlibrary loan requests
  • fee-based database searches
  • postal notifications

Late fees apply when loan periods are exceeded — including interlibrary loans:

  • up to 7 calendar days overdue: €1.00 per item
  • up to 14 calendar days: €2.00 per item
  • up to 21 calendar days: €5.00 per item
  • for each additional week: €5.00 per item

The maximum late fee per item is €20.00.

For weekend loans, the late fee is €1.00 per item and day, plus an additional charge if returned after 11:00 a.m. on Monday.

If you lose a book, you will be charged the replacement cost plus an administration fee of €15.00.

The standard interlibrary loan fee is €1.50 per request.

Payment Options

  • Cash payments can be made:
Monday to Friday, 9:00–16:45 at the library’s payment desk.
  • You can also transfer fees to the following account:

Books "in Bearbeitung"

Sometimes the OPAC shows the note “in Bearbeitung” (in processing) in the “Shelfmark” field — often followed by a code such as “W324”, which indicates the book’s future shelfmark.

This is because, at the University Library, newly ordered books are listed in the OPAC immediately, even before they arrive or are fully processed.

If you wish to consult a book marked “in Bearbeitung”, please ask at the information desk in the reading room.
The item may already be in the library building, just not yet on the shelf. In such cases, we will prioritise its processing for you upon request.
