History of the university

Over the course of roughly 300 years (1506–1811), the old university in Frankfurt (Oder) made its mark on the history of European higher education. Many of its scholars were of supra-regional importance. Nevertheless, large parts of its history remain obscure. The experiences of students and professors, the relationship between the city and the university, and the university’s impact on European cultural history are aspects that still require exploration or reinterpretation.

The Association for the Study of the History of the Viadrina (Förderverein zur Erforschung der Geschichte der Viadrina e.V.) seeks to contribute to addressing the open questions surrounding the history of the university on the Oder. It regularly publishes an annual report, which is available free of charge to its members. This report documents the association’s activities and includes scholarly articles on the history of the university in Frankfurt (Oder).
