Module 1a: Introduction to Library Use primarily for students of Cultural Studies and Economics

Target group: Users with no prior knowledge of the University Library's facilities (especially first-year students, transfer students)

Content: This tour gives participants a first insight into the University Library's facilities and services. The textbook collection, the reading room, the lending conditions, the importance of the chip card for the University Library, the structure of a shelfmark and the University Library's signposting system will be presented. The self-service functions of the OPAC (University Library's online catalogue) are also explained: Reservations, renewals, assigning passwords and basic search strategies. Participation is strongly recommended for all first-semester students who want to get an overview of the University Library's services.

Bags must be locked in the lockers provided before entering the library. It is therefore essential that you obtain your own padlock and bring it with you every time you visit the library.

Module 1b Courses in library knowledge and information management

Step 1: How to use the University library, general introduction

Audience: Library users new to the service of the University library

Intention: You will be introduced to the service programme of the University library, the methods of finding media in the library (system of signatories, the local guidance system, explanation of research methods with the electronic catalogue OPAC, databases), loaning conditions and general rules and services. You will be introduced as well to the self-service-functions of the Online Catalogue: Password-management, your personal account of loaned media, pre-booking of loaned media, prolonging of loaned media for example.

Module 1c Wprowadzenie do użytkowania biblioteki

Adresaci szkolenia: Użytkownicy biblioteki bez doświadczenia w pracy biblioteczenej i bez wystarczającej znajomości języka niemieckiego (przede wszystkim studenci rozpoczynający studia, studenci z innych uniwersytetów).

Treści szkolenia: Uczestnicy szkolenia zapoznają się z pomieszczeniami i usługami biblioteki uniwersyteckiej. Poznają czytelnię, zbiór podręczników, warunki wypożyczania, zasady posługiwania się kartą biblioteczną, strukturę sygnatur, sposób odnajdywania książek na półce. Ponadto zapoznają się z funkcjami, jakie oferuje katalog internetowy biblioteki (OPAC): zamawianie mediów, przedłużanie, zmiana kodu dostępu do konta i podstawowe strategie przeszukiwania katalogu biblioteczengo. Szkolenie szczególnie polecamy wszystkim studentom pierwszego roku, którzy chcieliby zapoznać się z ofertą biblioteki uniwersyteckiej.

Module 2 How to find literature in the library - tips and tricks for OPAC searches

This module only takes place at the beginning of the winter semester.

Target group: Users who have attended the University Library's introductory event (Module 1) and interested parties with little previous knowledge

Content: Participants are instructed in the use of the research functions of the University Library's OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue), which now lists over 400,000 media. Based on the user's question, adequate search strategies are demonstrated with the sensible integration of indices from catalogue dictionaries and standard files. This is followed by a discussion of how search terms can be linked and hit lists narrowed down.
Exercise examples illustrate what has been said in a targeted manner.

Module 3 Possibilities of obtaining literature that is not available at the University Library

This module only takes place at the beginning of the winter semester.

Target group: Students regardless of semester, student assistants of the chairs, research assistants of the university

Content: Participants are given an overview of the options for obtaining literature that is not available at the University Library. The document delivery service SUBITO will also be presented. The event lasts approx. 1 hour.

Module 4 University Library databases and the Internet as a source of information

This module only takes place at the beginning of the winter semester.

Target group: Users with no prior knowledge

Content: Participants will gain an insight into how to use the University Library's online databases and information services from the internet. Knowledge, handling and research strategies of the databases are explained using examples.
The databases provide assistance in effective literature searches. Examples of databases from the University Library's collection are presented with their different interfaces, search and storage options. In addition, sample searches are shown at individual workstations.
The University Library's WWW offer serves as a starting point for the presentation of further sources of information on the Internet. Examples of useful addresses on the WWW for searching for information and how to use them are explained here. This is a basic course. Subject-specific knowledge is offered in more advanced courses (currently limited to law). The introduction takes about three quarters of an hour.

Module 5 Finding the right in the University Library - an introduction to finding and analysing legal literature for first-year students or as a refresher in SS 2025

In this introductory series, you will be familiarised with the methodological steps and techniques for finding legal sources and the relevant secondary literature for their interpretation, and how to fully substantiate the results of your interpretation.

Part 1
Introduction to using the University Library, University Library services, basic rules for researching legal literature using examples and exercises
You can either take part in one of the face-to-face guided tours or attend one of the online sessions. Feel free to contact us if you are interested in an introduction but the dates offered do not suit you.

Guided tours of the University Library's reading room take place during the lecture period every 1st Tuesday of the month at 13:00.
