European University Viadrina Publication Fund
Since 2023, the university has offered a publication fund to support open access (OA) publishing of journal articles (APCs = Article Processing Charges) to members of the University.
Publication fund for articles
Eligibility
If no other project, material, or third-party funding is available, authors may apply to the central publication fund.
Funding approval: Applications require countersignature from the dean’s office or the head of the ZWE (Central Business Unit), and prospective applicants must verify the journal’s credibility.
Funding in 2025: Up to € 2,000 per article for publications in non-DEAL journals, subject to application volume and available funds.
DEAL journals: APCs are fully covered under the existing DEAL agreements. This regulation is valid until the end of 2025, with an evaluation following data analysis—further details will follow.

Project DEAL - Open Access and Access to e-Journals
Viadrina participates in the Germany-wide DEAL agreements, enabling authors to achieve greater visibility through Open Access publishing and granting access to extensive journal collections.
Publish & Read agreements with major commercial publishers are negotiated by the German Rectors’ Conference.
The negotiation objectives of Project DEAL
Open Access publishing: All articles authored by researchers at DEAL institutions are published under CC BY licensing, including peer review.
Read access: Permanent full-text access to all e-journals within participating publishers’ portfolios.
Pricing model: Based on publication volume under a predictable “Publish & Read” agreement.

Participating publishers and term
Wiley ranks as the third-largest publisher in terms of the annual volume of publications involving German academic authors are included in the DEAL agreements. Nearly 10,000 articles by German authors can be made Open Access in Wiley journals annually.

Springer Nature is the second most important publisher for German scientific institutions and publishes around 17% of all scientific articles produced there each year.
The DEAL agreement enables open access publishing in around 2,340 Springer Nature journals and at the same time offers participating institutions access to almost the entire range of journals published by the publisher.

As the most important publisher, the new DEAL contract with Elsevier from 2024 complements the range of open access publishing in the publisher's journals. With around 11,000 publications, the contract is of central importance for the German scientific landscape.
