FAQ of the University Archive

Common questions about using the Archive

No, not without the author’s permission. Final theses are part of the examination record and are therefore considered personal data. They may only be made available to third parties in exceptional cases or with the express authorisation of the author.

No. As is standard practice in all archives, documents held by the University Archive cannot be borrowed. They may only be consulted at the designated workstations during the archive’s opening hours.

An exception applies to materials held in the intermediate archive. As these remain the legal property of the originating institution, they may be loaned back to that institution if required.

The records of the original Viadrina University, which was dissolved in 1811, are held in various institutions. An overview, including selected extracts from relevant finding aids, is available in our Archive portal Alma Mater Viadrina.

In addition, a selection of books from the former Viadrina Library—preserved at the University of Wrocław Library—has been digitised as part of a joint project. These can be accessed online via the German Digital Library (Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek) using the search term "Viadrina".

Such information can be found in the register books of the former university. The original records are held at the Brandenburg State Archives in Potsdam (Pr. Br. Rep. 86 University of Frankfurt (Oder), Nos. 55–60).

The University Archive of the European University Viadrina also holds a printed edition of the old matriculation registers:

Alte Universitäts-Matrikeln – 1st: Universität Frankfurt an der Oder, Volumes 1–3 (1506–1811), by Ernst Friedlaender. Edited with the assistance of Georg Liebe and Emil Theuner. Osnabrück: Zeller, 1965 (reprint of the 1887–1891 edition).

An electronic version of these volumes is available via the Digital Library of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern:
Vol. 1: (1506-1648)
Vol. 2: (1649-1811)
Vol. 3: Index of persons and places
